Community Needs and Wants- Police Officers

This week an important visitor came to our classroom. A Police Officer Stephanie. Pre-K friends put their heads together to think what is police officers job in our community. Everyone agrees that their job is to keep our community as a peaceful place and keep everyone safe.

Friends had a lots of questions to our guest.

Emma wanted to know, how do police officers keep people safe?

Stephanie said, that Police Officers go to a special Police Officers School where they learn how to keep community safe, and how to treat people who make wrong choices.

Menny wanted to know, what police officers do if two cars got into an accident?

Stephanie said, that they come to an accident and first thing they do is to make sure that no one is hurt. Then they write a report about what happened.

Eliana wanted to know, what do police officers do if they need help?

Stephanie said, that indeed sometimes police officers need help. If there is fire, they call firemen to rescue people; if someone is hurt, they call ambulance; sometimes they call more skillful officers.

David wanted to know, what police officers will do if a man hits other man?

Stephanie said, that if one man badly hurts other,he breaks the rule of a peaceful community and police officers can put him into a jail.

Sophie wanted to know, why do police officers put people in jail?

Stephanie said, that only people who make wrong choices go to jail. It gives them time to think and change their behavior.

Rachel, Jason and Naomi wanted to know, how does a police dog help police officers?

Stephanie said, that dogs have an excellent sense of smell. Dogs go to a special police dogs school where they get trained. Police dogs are helping police officers to patrol streets and make sure that everyone is safe. Dogs can find anyone anywhere if it is necessary.

After answering all questions, Stephanie was kind to let friends to try on her police officer's jacket with a special badge with her number and name. Stephanie was twice rewarded for a great job she has done.

Another part of police officers uniform is a bulletproof vest.The vest is made of tightly woven material to protect a police officer.

Stephanie showed friends her walkie-talkie that she uses to stay connected with her partner and with the police station. Stephanie told friends that it is important to know home address in case someone might get lost.
